Peter Baxter Biography

In 1962 I was born in Kenya on the cusp of the political changeover, and later educated and raised in Rhodesia during the last, difficult day’s of that country’s history. In the aftermath of political collapse I left what had become Zimbabwe and began top travel both locally and abroad.

I entered the travel industry as a film unit fixer very briefly shuttling film crews back and forth as the international media dwelt on the drought and famine of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Thereafter a passion for mountaineering drew me into professional mountain guiding which I pursued in the beautiful Chimanimani Mountains of Zimbabwe, and later to Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains of Central Africa. I have also over the years guided regionally with a particular emphasis on the ecological and wildlife regions of Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa.

As an author my first published book was a definitive history of pre-independence Zimbabwe entitled Rhodesia: Last Outpost of the British Empire. I have since then written on behalf of the Rhodesian Services Association a history of the Rhodesia Regiment, in combination with a comprehensive research and editorial team, a brief history of the Selous Scouts, one of the premier special force units of the Rhodesian Army, a study of French military involvement in the Central African Republic, a comprehensive history of the Mau Mau Emergency in Kenya and I am currently working on a detailed history of African conflict provisionally entitled Bullets, Virus’s and Shantytowns.

Look out for a history of the Liberian/Sierra Leon Civil War and a detailed study of the Somali pirate phenomenon in 2013, and check out my blog at peterbaxterafrica.com
